A day in Tapalpa - Jalisco’s First Magic Town

  • We spent a day in Talpalpa, holly’s first designated Pueblo magico, about two hours south from Guadalajara high in the Sierra Madre mountains. The name comes from the NAHUATL word meaning land of colors. The main church in the plaza, the temple of San Antonio, was built by Franciscan Friars, starting in 1650 and remarkably still hesitates, original Mesquite wood floor. The plaza itself feels like something out of Europe – shopping, hotels, spas, coffee, shops, and on the day we visited, what looked like the entire town gathered under a tent watching a soccer game. This is what starting over at 60 looks like – finding beautiful places like this just two hours from home. I’m Guillermo Black rock, a 60-year-old gay married US immigrants living in San Antonio on Lake Chapala in Jalisco Mexico.
