Andy Rouse on Photographing Fighting Tigers & Rare Leopards

  • Host Toby Jermyn welcomes British wildlife photographer, tour leader, and conservationist Andy Rouse to the Pangolin Podcast, where guests choose four of their own images and one by another photographer for their remote “humble dwelling.”
Rouse recounts winning a humorous category at BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year as a student with an image of a fox chewing a garden gnome, then shares stories and technique behind his chosen photographs: subadult tigers fighting in Ranthambore, a wide-angle spectacled bear portrait from Ecuador’s cloud forest, an atmospheric roe deer image made through stalking and underexposure for mood, and a creative night pan of Kenya’s black leopard “Geezer” shot at ISO 51,200.
He discusses fieldcraft, ethical distance, guiding clients, publishing standards, creativity through failure, and mental health, then chooses rural Wiltshire as his forever location and admires Sergey Gorshkov’s backlit elephant photograph.
