We Almost Swam in a Crocodile Lagoon in Sumba | Ratenggaro
Our Sumba road trip takes us to Ratenggaro Village, one of the most spectacular traditional villages in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia. But before we even made it inside, I was about to jump into a beautiful lagoon when a local man suddenly came running over shouting one word: crocodiles.
That definitely changed the swimming plans.
We continue into Ratenggaro Traditional Village, famous for its towering Sumbanese houses, ancient stone graves, coastal setting and living Marapu traditions. Ratenggaro is one of Southwest Sumba's most distinctive cultural sites, with traditional houses reaching around 15 metres high and hundreds of historic stone graves in the area.
We explore the village, meet a local family surrounded by corn and pumpkins, and share our honest experience of travelling through Sumba so far. This island is beautiful, culturally fascinating and completely different from Bali, but tourism here can also feel intense and unpredictable.
